February 26, 2014[Nairobi] — President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Juba this morning for talks with President Salva Kiir on the South Sudan crisis.

The President’s visit comes a day after the National Security Council (NSC) approved an additional deployment of 310 troops to the Kenya Battalion in South Sudan.

“In the true spirit of brotherhood, we will not abandon (South Sudan) but stand with our neighbours at their time of need,” Kenyatta said.

He said Kenya cannot rest when its neighbour is in turmoil, adding that all efforts must be made to restore peace and stability in South Sudan.

Last December talks resulted the release of seven political detainees in January, enabling them to join the second round of negotiations in Addis Ababa on a comprehensive and political agreement between the warring parties.

President Uhuru was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo and Kenya’s Special Representative on South Sudan peace talks, Mr. Dalmas Otieno who is also the Member of Parliament for Rongo
