April 13, 2014(Norway) — South Sudan’s humanitarian crisis as a result of the armed conflict in the country. We can not sit idly by and watch. Norway has therefore followed a request from the United Nations to organize a conference in Oslo in May to mobilize resources for this serious crisis, “said Foreign Minister Börge Brende.

The situation in Southern Sudan is very serious. Over a million people have fled their homes.Up to 300,000 of these are refugees in neighboring countries. Four million people need food aid, and this number will increase dramatically if not comprehensive emergency aid arrives.Only 30 percent of the estimated need for humanitarian assistance has so far secured.Norway has been engaged in what today is southern Sudan for decades.

The international community must respond to the crisis in a much more robust manner. It takes money, and they are needed now. This conference will be important to create awareness about the situation, mobilize more resources to deal with the crisis and emphasize our common responsibility to respond. From the Norwegian side has so far allocated 100 million for humanitarian efforts. We will also post about the Norwegian aid to better meet the humanitarian needs in Southern Sudan, says Brende.
