June 28, 2014(Nyamilepedia) — A confidential report leaked to Nyamilepedia by an insider alleges that the Governor of Central Equatoria State, Clement Wani Konga, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Friday, June 27, 2014.
A meeting chaired by Salva Kiir Mayardit, the president, was allegedly held on Thursday at Bilpam headquarters in Juba to morph the intelligence to assassinate the senior leaders from the Greater Equatoria. According to the insider, the meeting was attended by the Chief of General Staff, Paul Malong Awan, Akol Kor and other extremists from within the presidential circle.
“ A meeting held in Bilpam chaired by President Kiir, Malong Awan & Akol Kor, they lay out a plan to assassinate the three governors of Equatoria governors” said the insider, on the condition of anonymity.
The source believes that the closed-door meeting laid out an intensive plan to assassinate the three governors of Greater Equatoria, Clement Wani Konga, Luis Lobong and Joseph Bakosoro, and to arrest some powerful generals in the army, mostly the Equatorian sons and daughters, who are believed to be firm supporters of federalism and the three governors.
The source alleges that the CES Governor, Clement Wani Konga received the intelligence reports, including the minute of the meeting, and bravely confronted president Salva Kiir for laying out such a “cowardice act” to intimidate the population that stands up for federalism.
“Clement got the minutes of the meeting and confronted President Kiir. Kiir denied the minutes, but Malong and Kiir left the country for the assassination to be carried out” the insider continued
Kiir has reportedly denied any such plan, however, the insider confirms that Salva Kiir and Malong Awan have sneaked out of Juba, and possibly the country, for the assassination to be conducted in their absent.
Governor Konga, who closely monitored the development, for the sake of his life, has “fled the country without permission”. The insider reports that Konga has left Juba by road on Friday and is believed to be heading southwards.
The two other governors, who by virtues of their duties happened to be at their respective headquarters, outside Juba, are yet to response on the new developments. Attempts to reached governor Wani have failed so far.
The three governors have stood with their people, demanding a federal system of governance against the president’s will. The president and supporters of the current centralized government, mostly the loyalists, have criticizes and opposed the idea on the pretext that it’s a “kokora” or divisive, an argument that is contradicted by the government officials, including the president. The president believes that Federalism is an attempt by his main rival, Dr. Machar, to divide his “internal front”.
Salva Kiir, through his press secretary Ateny Wek Ateny, has warned the Equatorians, on Monday, to stop calling for federalism, a call that was heeded by many people. The president has drawn “red lines” last week but were also ignored.
Like the three governors, Machar, who is now leading a grounded rebellion and other senior SPLM leaders narrowly escaped assassinations and arrests in December for speaking out against the government of Salva Kiir. Majority, nearly 15 senior SPLM leaders were arrested but later released due to international pressure, pioneered by the armed opposition, and others due to lack of substantial evidence.
