September 02, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — Zambia has called on the leaders of South Sudan from all parties to adhere to the recently signed peace agreement, mediated by the regional block, IGAD, and urges them to implement the agreement to restore stability.
According to news reports from Zambia, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba, addressing the media in the capital, Lusaka, called South Sudanese leaders including President Salva Kiir and his former deputy now leading the Armed Opposition, Riek Machar, to implement the recently signed peace agreement and work together to alleviate the suffering of the people of South Sudan, a call echoed by leaders across the continent.
President Edgar Lungu of Zambia has been actively involved in mediation between the warring parties in the country as part of the African leaders in order to stop the civil war that has been ravaging the world’s youngest nation.
“Zambia has envisaged that peace in the great lakes region will support development and it is our hope that the two leaders in South Sudan adhere to the treaty in the interest of their people” Foreign Minister Harry Kalaba told reporters.
In February the Zambian President, Mr Lungu, held separate meetings with Mr. Kiir and Dr. Machar in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on the sidelines of an African Union (AU) Summit in a bid to bridge the gap between the two leaders and urged them to sign a peace agreement.
The Foreign Minister said the agreement would open a new dawn for South Sudan and give the country an opportunity for a new transition into peace and stability.
