Jan 25, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —- South Sudan’s incoming First Vice President of the Transitional Government of National Unity and the leader of the armed opposition, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has met Uganda’s president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, today outside the capital in the country’s western region.
According to the Ugandan Presidential Press Secretary, Lindah Wamboka Nabusayi, the long awaited diplomatic mission, which was expected to take place at the Ugandan’s State House in Entebbe, was promptly moved to a small lodge outside the Capital to Lodge Masindi in Western Uganda, a distant of approximately 212 kilometers or 3 hours drive.
“I can confirm His Excellency is going to meet Dr. Machar early today at State Lodge Masindi. I can’t tell the exact time and ingredients of the meeting for now,” Ms. Nabusayi told Chimreports over the phone.
According to the insiders, the poorly covered diplomatic mission took place on Sunday night behind closed doors in Masindi.
Clarified by Ambassador Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, the SPLM/SPLA[IO] Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Riek Machar met the Ugandan’s president on Monday. Lol did not specify the time and the venue of the meeting.
“The First Vice President Designate of the Republic of South Sudan and Chairman and Commander in Chief of SPLM/SPLA (IO) Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon just met President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni January 25, 2016.” Amb. Lol reportedly said.
According to Ambassador Lol, the meeting was “excellent” and touches on the peace in South Sudan and the region.
The delegation further confirmed that Dr. Machar will hold a press conference on January 26, 2016, tomorrow in Kampala, Uganda at 10:00 AM. The venue was yet to be determined at the time of this report.
Although the Ugandan President is known for changing venues for important missions to western region, the presidential press secretary, Ms. Nabusayi, explained that President Museveni went to the Western region to conduct his re-election campaigns.
Worried of the past incidents, many supporters of SPLM/SPLA have expressed concerns over the safety of the First Vice President designate, Dr. Machar and his delegation.
After the signing of the Compromised Peace Agreement, which designated the then Chairman and commander in Chief of SPLM/SPLA, Dr. John Garang de Mabior, in 2005 as the First Vice President of Sudan, Museveni invited Dr. John for unexpected weekend meeting in Kampala; however, before Dr. John arrived on Friday afternoon Museveni changed the venue to his home towm at Rwakitura in Western Uganda, a distant of approximately 250 kilometers or nearly 4 hours drive from the capital.
In Rwakitura on Friday and Saturday July 29-30, 2005, Dr. Garang met the President and foreign envoys accredited to Uganda including Mr Francois Gordon (Britain), Ms Yoka Brandt (Netherlands), Mr Jimmy Kolker (US) and Mr Stig Barlyng (Denmark). Upon leaving Rwakitura on Saturday evening, Garang died in Presidential helicopter, killing 12 South Sudanese delegates and 7 Ugandans on board.
In other reports, South Sudan’s security agents, prevented Mabior Garang de Mabior, the son of SPLM/SPLA founder and SPLM/SPLA-IO secretary for Information and Public Relations from leaving the South Sudanese capital, Juba.
Hon. Mabior and other delegates of SPLM/SPLA in opposition were expected to join Dr. Machar in Kampala for the peace mission.
The leader of the armed opposition, who met President Museveni last in 2014 in Khartoum-Sudan, is optimistic that the today’s meeting with Museveni and other diplomats in Uganda will bear fruits to the stagnated Compromised Peace Agreement.
“For me this is important because president Museveni from day one was a part to the conflict, to the war. Uganda was also a party to search for peace in south Sudan until the peace agreement was signed, and according to the agreement, Uganda is also part of the implementing countries; it’s a grantor top to the peace agreement.,” said Dr. Riek Machar.
“So I think this meeting in Kampala will create new relations.” Dr. Machar continued.
