South Sudan To Receive $50 Million Grants From World Bank

Dollars

May 08, 2017 (Nyamilepedia) —— Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank has today pledged 50 Million US dollars as Grants to South Sudan, the money will go towards Emergency Food and Nutrition in South Sudan. This sum of money is released from the IDA’s Crisis Response Window (CRW) as a response to South Sudan humanitarian crisis. South Sudan Unity State was declared a “starvation zone” in February 2017 to which South Sudan government and South Sudan armed factions acknowledged the widespread of famine and starvation even beyond the Unity State.

In order for the starving South Sudan populations to be reached, the humanitarian agencies of the United Nations including WFP, UNICEF and FAO that have been struggling to help the famine hit populations throughout South Sudan civil war will be contracted.

South Sudan conflict has forced hundreds of thousands out of their homes, made millions of people to seek refuge in the neighboring countries, yet the situation deteriorates each day. The conflict has starved the whole nation and World Bank’s Emergency Food and Nutrition Security Project is releasing this amount of money in order to rescue 4.9 million South Sudanese currently affected by the ongoing war.

The World Bank pledges that it will intervene by providing nutrition to South Sudanese children under the age of five in the famine hit zones. The IGAD-led peace initiative collapsed on July 8, 2016 in what was opinionated as an assassination attempt on the life of the former First Vice President Riek Machar who fled Juba to DRC, only to be airlifted to Khartoum by the United Nations on humanitarian grounds. Whether a durable peace is to be revived or renegotiated remains a question awaiting an answer as IGAD, the regional peace broker, is accused of taking sides in the conflict and AU is slowly losing neutrality.
