May 06, 2017 (Nyamilepedia) —— The Ghanaian peacekeepers in South Sudan foiled an attack at UN protection site in Leer town of former Unity State, says David Shearer, head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Although it has not been established which warring party to the conflict carried out the attack on civilians sheltering in UN protection camp, Leer town where the attack occurred is under the control of South Sudan army. Chief of the UN Mission in South Sudan has condemned the attack, calling it a callous act that disregards the lives of civilians, United Nations and humanitarian workers.

The attack happened on Wednesday at 11 PM at the Missions Temporary Operating Base (TOB) in Leer town of the former Unity state. According to the UNMISS statement, the attackers came from the direction of the government. The Ghanaian peacekeepers at the base swiftly responded to the attackers and repulsed them. David Shearer has lauded Ghanaian quick action against the attackers and describes it as the true spirit of the peacekeeping.
