Nov 27, 2015 (Nyamilepedia) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) led by the former Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has elected Dr. Dhieu Mathok Diing Wol as Movement’s Secretary General at its Pagak GHQs.
National Liberation Council of the Movement overwhelmingly elected Dr Dhieu Mathok who formerly served in the rebel camp as national committee chairperson for foreign relations and head of national committee for roads and transport; the latter capacity being his last official role before his election to the new post.
“SPLM/SPLA (IO) congratulates Comrade Dr. Dhieu Mathok Diing Wol on winning the democratic election as the first Secretary General of the Movement,” said opposition leader’s spokesman James Gatdet Dak in a statement he issued on his Facebook page on Saturday.
The election was conducted in Pagak where Members of the highest executive body of the armed opposition converged to deliberate on the issues surrounding IGAD-Plus peace initiative that was signed on August 17, 2015 in Ethiopian’s capital, Addis Ababa.
Although Dak didn’t mention the exact number of votes Dr Dhieu Mathok garnered during the election process, he said he was overwhelmingly elected as the Secretary General of the Movement.
“Members of the National Liberation Council (NLC) overwhelmingly elected him in Pagak, the General Headquarters, in a free and fair election, entrusting him to organize the Movement’s General Secretariat and at the 21 Federal States level,” continued Dak.
The newly elected Secretary General accompanied armed opposition’s leader to many foreign trips including the latest trip to the United States in October this year; a trip the opposition leader highlighted as “the campaign to educate South Sudanese Diaspora on importance of IGAD-Plus mediated talks”.
This is the first time for the SPLM-IO to have Secretary General in charge of the Movement since the ongoing civil war broke out in December 15, 2015.
The war has cost thousands of lives and displaced more than 1.5 million people while hundreds of thousands sought refuge at UNMISS protection camps across the country.
