African Union (AU) Says South Sudan Peace is Balanced, Calls on Leaders to Accept Peace and Implement it in Good Faith

AU LogoAugust 20, 2015 (Nyamilepedia) – In it’s first response since the signing of the South Sudan Peace Agreement in the Ethiopia capital Addis Ababa on the 17th August, the African Union has described the IGAD mediated peace agreement as “balanced” and would need to be implemented in Good faith by all South Sudan parties in order to bring an everlasting solution to the current conflict ravaging the world’s youngest nation.

The AU called on the leaders to take peace and stability as the primary responsibility of any leader towards their people.

The agreement is .. “a balanced document whose faithful and effective implementation by all the parties would enable them to find a lasting solution to the current conflict”. AU chief Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma told media.

While addressing media at the Africa Union Head Quarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the chairpersons of the AU commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, said rejection of peace by any warring side would spell a disastrous for South Sudan with risks of instability in the entire region, calling all sides to accept peace.

“Deadlock in the peace process can only spell further disaster for South Sudan and its people, with far reaching implications for regional security and stability,” the AU commission chief told media in Addis Ababa.

The AU chief said the primary responsibility of any leader is to first bring peace and stability in the country.

The “primary responsibility” is to “bringing about the peace and security that their people are so desperately yearning for.”
