10 April 2017 – Juba, South Sudan – Aguer Deng and Joseph Giir have made history by being the first two students from South Sudan to be accepted into the MD programme at St George’s University, Grenada. They began premedical coursework in 2014.  At the University’s symbolic White Coat Ceremony in Grenada earlier this year, they joined new medical students from 96 countries.

Presenting Aguer Deng and Joseph Giir with their white coats, Dr Mayen Achiek, Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Juba, said that “we are very proud of them”. In this, the second of his visits to Grenada, Dr Achiek commended the students for their achievements “in the face of extreme adversity. We acknowledge their commitment to return to South Sudan after graduation to help grow our young country’s medical infrastructure”.

Contact between the country of South Sudan and St George’s University was made in January 2014 with the goal of helping MD students from conflict-affected countries obtain degrees before returning to rebuild their medical services.
