Press Release
May 13th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The collapse of the August 2015 Agreement has been obvious since July 2016 and our Movement has repeatedly called for an inclusive, political process to review, revise and resuscitate the Agreement.
The new regime which emerged in Juba after the collapse of peace, through its intransigence in the recent peace process, has flaunted the good will of friends of South Sudan in the region and the world at large and we share with the Governments of the United Kingdom and Norway the frustration wrought by this lack of seriousness.
The positions taken by the Governments of the United Kingdom and Norway will help in persuading the regime to “see sense”.
The leadership of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) would like to take this opportunity to also recommend that the UK and Norway consider similar reviews for non-humanitarian assistance to South Sudan, as recommended by the US Government.
We are certain such action will additionally give the regime in Juba an incentive to pursue a peaceful settlement to the conflict.
The SPLM/SPLA (IO) reiterates our full commitment to a negotiated political settlement and share the belief that for peace to prevail, there must be a new, radically reformed and inclusive Transitional National Government, with checks and balances. Such checks and balances would prevent the unilateral abrogation of any future Agreement, as happened in 2016.
