For Immediate Release,
Sep 14, 2024(Nyamilepedia) — The South Sudan Human Rights Defenders Network (SSHRDN) joins the global community in commemorating the International Day of Democracy, a day to reaffirm our commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, human rights, and fundamental freedoms. As we observe this day, we recognize the critical importance of building and sustaining democratic institutions, promoting inclusive governance, and safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
James Bidal, Head of the Secretariat at SSHRDN, stated, “Democracy is more than just a system of governance; it is a fundamental right that belongs to every individual. In South Sudan, where the challenges of conflict, inequality, and exclusion persist, it is crucial to work towards a more transparent, accountable, and inclusive democratic process. This requires the active participation of all citizens, especially the marginalized, in decision-making processes that affect their lives.”
Mr. Bidal continued, “Today, we call upon the government of the Republic of South Sudan, civil society, and the international community to prioritize the protection of human rights defenders, journalists, and all those who courageously advocate for democratic values in South Sudan. A vibrant and resilient democracy depends on our collective ability to create an environment where all voices can be heard without fear of persecution or repression.”
The SSHRDN reiterates its commitment to fostering a culture of human rights and democracy in South Sudan. We urge all stakeholders to honor the spirit of this day by recommitting to meaningful dialogue, reforms, and actions that promote peace, justice, and equality for all.
