August 14th, 2014 (Cairo) — A popular South Sudanese journalist is fighting for his life in a Cairo hospital after he was brutally attacked in Egypt by a gang of thugs.
The columnist Dengdit Ayok was hacked with knives on Monday night and was left in a critical condition.
A graphic image of the previously unconscious journalist doing rounds on social media courtesy of his friends shows the deep cuts all over his body. He suffered multiple cuts on the neck, back and both his knees.
He underwent a ‘successful surgery’ last night as described by his friend who spoke to Nyamilepedia. All his cuts were stitched and he’s currently in recovery.
Family and friends of Dengdit suspect that the journalist was attacked because of a post he made on his Facebook regarding a South Sudanese violent gang in Egypt that robbed him off his valuables a week earlier. Dengdit’s attack comes after a reported gang attack on two South Sudanese teenagers earlier this month, one of them reportedly died from his injuries.
Dengdit first shot to the limelight in 2011 when he was arrested and detained for days by security personnels after he wrote an opinion piece entitled, “Nyanbeny”, criticizing the president’s daughter marriage to an Ethiopian man.
