August 09, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —– The South Sudanese in Diaspora Calls on the UNSC, US Government, and the World to Save South Sudanese through Deployment of a Third Force with Strong Mandate for the Protection of Civilians
New York, NY (August 1, 2016) – On Thursday, August 11, at 9:00am, members of the South Sudanese community in the Diaspora will hold a rally outside the U.N. Headquarters on East 47th St. and First Avenue, Dag Hammarskjold Park, in support of the deployment of United Nations and regional forces in South Sudan.

Violence around the country, and particularly recent attacks in Juba, has claimed the lives of hundreds and displaced tens of thousands of civilians. In Juba, the U.N. Protection of Civilian compound was attacked killing civilians and U.N. workers. The World Food Program storage was looted, denying thousands of the much needed humanitarian relief. In recent weeks there has been rise in civilian killings, arbitrary arrests, looting, and raping and gang raping of women. For all these reasons, there is urgency for the South Sudanese to raise their voices to end the violence.
Led by an alliance of South Sudanese community and civic organizations, faith based, academics, and human rights activists, the objectives of the rally are to urge the UNSC to endorse the IGAD/AU proposal on a third force; to deploy an additional U.N. force of well trained, well equipped, well led and with proper mandate and clear chain of command; to end the violence; and reviving the implementation of the Agreement for the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (ARCISS).
The situation is urgent. An effective force is required to protect civilians from abuse, allow for distribution of humanitarian aid, and prevent further descent into chaos. In the words of US Ambassador Samantha Power, “We have to get this right but it also must be done with great urgency. Let us not be fooled into believing that time is on our side. It is not. Events in recent weeks have demonstrated how quickly violence can re-ignite and how devastating are the human consequences when it does”.
Speakers will include Mr. Pagan Amum, Founder, South Sudan Reborn and formerly Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
South Sudanese are appealing to the world community that the time for condemnation has passed: the time for action and accountability is at hand. People of South Sudan have suffered enough and time has come for brothers and sisters in the region to get involved and save the young nation and the peace agreement that has being signed. Those who are holding South Sudanese civilians hostages must be held accountable.
We are calling on all people of conscience to rally with us.
