Jan 30, 2017(Nyamilepedia) ——- The Centre for Peace & Justice as organization working in human rights in South Sudan we call on the UN Security Council members to call for extraordinary meeting to discuss the on-going confrontation in South Sudan, and impose an immediate arms embargo on South Sudan warring parties to save life. The government led by President Salva Kiir and his First Vice President Taban Deng Gai, has failed to uphold its responsibility to protect civil populations, instead their soldiers are committing mass killing, rape, illegal detention of human rights defenders and political activist, enforce disappearance of journalists, human rights activists and closure of media houses that are covering human rights situation in South Sudan. The UN Security Council members must act now to rescue life of thousand civilian who are expose to human rights violations and abuses.
The UN Security Council should impose a global arms embargo on South Sudan. This should include the supplying, sales, transfer, maintenance, and operation of all weapons, ammunition, military vehicles, other military equipment or any military cooperation agreement. This will enhance and help reduce all unlawful attacks on civil population and mass atrocities.
We strongly encourage the UN Security Council members to adhere to it Code of Conduct, which was adapted by majority of council members, which stated and calls upon all members of the Council not to vote against a credible draft resolution aiming at preventing mass on-going atrocities.
Since 8th, July, 2016 violence resumed once again in Capital Juba between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the SPLA in Opposition [SPLA-IO]. The UN and other International Organization has reported that thousands were internally displaced and other seek refuge in the neighboring countries with massive human rights violation include target killing, rape, detention, burning of villages and among other serious human rights violations including killing of two UN peacekeepers, in more than four days of intensive fighting before a cessation of hostilities that was called by both sides government and SPLM-IO. Tanks and heavy weaponry were used; civilian residing in neighborhoods experienced a heavy shelling and killed in crossfire, thousands of civilians fled for safety to UNMISS, ADRA [Seven Days Adventist] and Catholic Church compounds in Capital Juba.
A global arms embargo on South Sudan warring parties would help secure the safety of South Sudanese civil population and also may bring an end to the current conflict which IGAD countries fail to resolve for almost four years now.
We urge the UN Security Council members to impose arms embargo as way to minimize on-going violations and abuses of human rights as well as bring about peace to world youngest nation South Sudan.
