Poem: Letter to my leaders

By Kuer Revelation,

I want to be Home,

A family sit under a tree around which they live in the village of Aburoc, South Sudan, on May 11, 2017. Thousands of people, predominantly from the Shilluk tribe, have fled here after fighting forced them from their homes. Arriving in Aburoc with only what they could carry, many people are living outside in the open without any shelter.(Photo credit: Aljazeera/Phil Hatcher-Moore)

Nov 22, 2021 — I am a kid, a South Sudanese kid by nationality, a son and a native,

Cry for peace and calmness for me to be home,

Insecurity and impunity have caused my sleep dry,

Guns and abrupt arrest have scared my peace of mind,

Corruption and nepotism have killed my creativity,

Home, sweet home I want to come.

What happened?

The sleepless nights you have had during the struggle, the trees you slept under, the rains that rained you on and the love that made you stayed away from your wives, have you achieved your targets or what happened? What distracted the course of your thoughts and the clear visions you had for this nation?

I wanna be home, the home my fathers and forefathers struggled and died for. The home you had initially fought for, that conducive environment where I could plan and execute my dreams, that home where I could call on to my neighbor with smiles and dance, inhaling the breeze and swaying sideways to the rhythm of the place I call home….I missed the agenda, because I am still not convinced, that my leaders fought for nothing but to be in confusion and in a divided nation… what happened?

Ouch! Have I trodden on a thistle?!! South Sudan was our pride and we longed to embrace it with love and affection. But it is being turned and manipulated by few individuals.  From the onset of the struggle, the agenda behind the independence was self-governance, fair justice and just services to all south Sudanese. But what happened?  Has the idea been changed or did we have outsiders and invaders making decisions for us? So many aggravated crimes and pending questions whose answers shall never be given…kids are born and some like myself who was born during the struggle for the new Sudan is now ageing in war and in shameless denigrations from my world friends, those with future oriented and mindful leaders. Up to now, who is responsible for the crimes and for cold massacring of peace [people] and careless exploitations of nation resources?

What happened with the initial idea of conducive South Sudan of ululations and love, a home where a visitor could get accommodation for months without being questioned on when he/she should leave, or give budget for the stay, what happened to the prime concerns of protecting our homeland and its citizens?, does it mean money replace the core agenda and nation building is now a pocket notebook?

I am tired, tired to be a foreigner, oh  not you, the citizens, not you, us the native, not you  but peace lovers, not you but us…tired of all these , tired of the low self-esteem that my people die daily, tired that my leaders have no core respect for the nation and her citizens. Tired that my people side with impunity for them to be safe, tired that suggesting good is a threat and money buy the human dignity and fight for service delivery is a war of my tribesman, don’t touch him!, he is a leader. What happened, is leading the problem or ruling the issue?

Haha, not a laughing matter but can’t you see it? Don’t you smell it? Has it not been the atmosphere which enveloped us from day one of the war? but have you realized the impotency, the inability in a man to achieve an erection or orgasm? BTW, is the currency value the same? Do you still hold the previous respect from the neighboring countries? I want to be home but what happened?

But finally to Your Excellency, my beloved president, has the country turned to kingdom?  Why do we have suggesting groups whose titles not written in the constitution?  Who are these elites whose agenda overrides the constitutional parliamentarians? Should we have peace, are they part of governance or what are they?

Uh, I missed our pre- independence agenda and leadership structure.

Oh God bless South Sudan!!
