May 14, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – Human beings and other animals fight various wars that range from physical to many other forms that can be manifested. The nature, on other hand fights a war that is beyond anyone’s understanding. The natural law dictates that there are universal moral standards that are inborn in humankind throughout the world, and these standards should form the basis on what is good or wrong; contrary to which the nature is forced to intervene.
Various religions, for instant the Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Shinto, Taoism et cetera, have got almost a similar understanding of the cause of death, being a phenomenon. However, the phenomena surrounding the widespread death of some of the prominent South Sudanese generals in the recent years to date is an extraordinary one.
First of all, it should be known to everyone that the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) that is being implemented currently is just a green light that gave the citizens a chance to breathe. They citizens had been undergoing hell; were terrorized and witnessed some of the worst human right violations in the world history. Sad enough, those acts were committed or supervised by some of the so call ‘generals’ in the country.
However, it is indisputable that majority of the military personnel stood by the innocent civilians whose love ones were massacred in Juba and in other parts of the country. These should be the people that ought to be celebrated for they stood with the citizens. It is indeed a surprise that the very people who carried out those atrocities are being mourned to the extent of making it a mockery to the innocent souls that they took away. History is going to judge each and every one who participated in the genocide and massacres that happened in the country.
The cry of the elderly who they set their homes ablaze, the cry of the underage girls they raped, they raped, the tears of the civilians whom they tortured, burnt alive, castrated and murdered will continue to hunt them one by one. The pain they inflicted on the civilians will forever look for them.
It is always saddening hearing deaths of some of these generals, moreover dying in the wrong side of the conflict. Human beings always tend to remember a person through his or her actions in major events like war, disaster et cetera. Unfortunately people always remember the negative/bad side of a person. Take for instance these generals; General Peter Par Jiek, General Gabriel Gatwech Chan (AKA Tangienye), General Johnson Gony Beliew and General Liah Diu Deang. All these generals had one thing in common, so what do you think the Nuer community at large will remember them for in terms of their loyalty in relation to the civil war? Will they be remembered as generals who stood with the community till the last minute? In contrast, make a comparison with these generals; General Chayot Manayang, General Koang Rambang, General Peter Gadet… Do you think the history will judge them the same? The answer is indeed no. The point I am trying to bring here is that we should embrace living together as brothers or perish together as fools as said by Martin Luther King Junior.
There numerous generals who passed on during the war, including the former chief of general staff, General Ajongo Mawut plus many other in the side of SPLM in government. However my article focuses on what I perceived as a ‘hunt for the traitors’. Curses among the Nuer are almost always inevitable for those regarded as backstabbers, murders, thieves and many more wrong doers in the community. The Nuer generals who are fighting their fellow Nuer are perishing at an alarming rate.
