August 1st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A 41-year-old woman who has been in critical condition following her suicide attempt in Kakuma refugee camp last month has succumbed into injuries and died at Kakuma General Hospital on Tuesday.
Despite medical interventions, Asunta Lal has been in a state of uncertainty due to fatal full-thickness burn injuries that affected almost all levels of skin layers and muscles.
During a brief interview with Nyamilpedia, a Kenyan doctor in charge of the female ward revealed that despite efforts to save her life, the patient could not make it.
“We tried our level best and many options to save her life, but they did not help,” she said, adding: “Some injuries caused by burns required skin grafting operations that could have been done on other parts of her body.”
Last month, a relative told Nyamilepedia that Asunta, a mother of two children, had deliberately taken Jerican with five liters of diesel fuel, poured it on her body and set it ablaze. The accident involved her 11-year-old daughter who died immediately after the suicide attempt.
South Sudan descended into civil war in 2013, forcing thousands of people to live in intolerable conditions, and leading to high suicide rates.
