“We are hungry, pay us on time”, University of Juba Lecturers on strike

March 9, 2022 — Lecturers at the University of Juba have broken their long silence and decided to resort to a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday demanding the government must pay their salaries this time.

The disgruntled teachers are disappointed that they have not been paid for the last six months and even when they were paid, they were never paid on time.

The group of teachers were seen holding signposts written ” Help Salva Kiir, we need our new salary structure”, ” Pay teachers a living wages” , “We are hungry, pay us on time “.

Prof. John Akec, the Vice Chancellor of the Juba University published a statement yesterday outlining the demands of teachers as “resolution of University’s Dean Board sitting over the matter”.

The lecturers are demanding that their salaries be paid by next Monday, March 14, 2022.

“.. The Ministry of Finance and Planning to ensure that all six-month salary arrears due to University Staff are paid by Monday, March 14, 2022”,the statement reads.

The Teachers threatened to suspend lectures and examinations should Ministry of Finance not adhere to their demands next week.

“.. The Administration of the University of Juba to suspend lectures and examinations, should the Ministry of Finance and Planning not clear the arrears due by Monday, March 14, 2022”,the statement added.

The Administration of the University is also urging both Ministry of Finance and Planning, and Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology to revisit and enforce a new salary structure for University Staff.

“.. The Ministry of Finance and Planning and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology to review and implement a new salary structure of University Staff”, the statement further elaborated.
