Juba, South Sudan,
June 25, 2021 – The Governor of Warrap State, Aleu Ayieny Aleu has called on First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar to revitalize the Wunlit Peace Initiative during a courtesy visit to Machar’s office to discuss security challenges in the State.
According to information from First President’s Press Unit, Aleu said he briefed the First Vice President on the general situation in Warrap State.
He said they discussed revitalizing the Wunlit Peace Initiative which brought the intercommunal clashes and cattle rustling between Western Nuer now (Unity State) communities and Dinka of Warrap communities to an end in 1999 under the auspices of the Nuer paramount chief and Dinka counterpart with the unwavering support of Dr. Machar.
“Governor Aleu also said, they discussed the reviving of Wunlit Peace Conference to halt communal conflicts, enhance security and stability in the states of Warrap, Unity, and Lakes”, said the statement.
“Aleu said H.E. the First Vice President pledged to support his state government efforts to maintain peace and stability in Warrap State”, it added.
Cattle rustling has been a cause of communal rivalry in South Sudan even before independence. The government of the day has made several failed attempts to bring cattle-related conflicts to an end.
