June 9, 2021 — French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped by a protester in the south-eastern part of France in a viral video circulating on Twitter.
In the video, Macron, dressed in a grey pair of trousers and a white long-sleeved shirt alongside his bodyguards were rushing to calm a group of protesters leaning against a barricade.
The French President humbled himself and reached out to the protesters before one of them pulled a hot five in his face.
Visibly upset, Macron was held back by his grotesque bodyguards. The person who slapped him was restrained by the police.
Reuters reports that a man identified as Damien Tarel aged 28 ran a club for enthusiasts of medieval swordsmanship and had no previous criminal record.
Tarel’s acquaintances described him as a man who loved period role-play and did not cause trouble. While the motive behind the slap is still unknown, media reports say Tarel is under investigation for assault against a public official.
