In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia this afternoon, Hon. Garang confirmed her arrival in the Republic of Djibouti as South Sudan representative to witness the swearing-in ceremony of the Djibouti President re-elect.

Hon. Rebecca Nyadeng, the widow to Dr. John Garang De Mabior, was appointed last year to the R-TGONU government as one of the vice presidents in the Republic of South Sudan to represent the former detainees.

“I have arrived in Djibouti city to attend the swearing-in ceremony of H.E. Ismail Omar Guelleh, the President of the republic of Djibouti. I’m here to represent South Sudan on behalf of H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit” she stated.

Guelleh was first elected as President in 1999 as the handpicked successor to his uncle, Hassan Gouled Aptidon, who had ruled Djibouti since independence in 1977. President Guelleh was re-elected in 2005, 2011, 2016 and now in 2021.

This year, however, the election was largely boycotted by the opposition amid complaints over widespread irregularities.

The Djiboutian president has been characterized as a dictator and his rule has been criticized by many human rights groups and international community.
