April 27th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Veteran South Sudan journalist and member of the country’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) , Alfred Taban, has died in the Ugandan capital Kampala, according to a close relative.
The relative who declined to be named however said he could not disclose the illness that let to his death but said he has been sick for a time.
He was one of the most influential media personalities in the world’s youngest nation. Taban was a Sudan correspondent for the London-based BBC.
He founded the Khartoum Monitor, the first independent English newspaper in Khartoum and Sudan as whole. The newspaper could later become known as the Juba Monitor following the independent of South Sudan and have it’s headquarters moved to Juba, the capital of the new nation.
He was the author of a daily column on the newspaper known as ‘Let’s Speak Out’s and he won several press awards for his outstanding stance towards human rights in Sudan’s western region of Darfur.
Following the signing of the peace deal by parties to South Sudan’s conflict, Taban was appointed an MP representing Kajo-Keji county in South Sudan’s parliament.
