January 15th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The United States has urged South Sudan president Salva Kiir Mayardit to remove government officials who have been recently sanctioned by the Trump Administration, the Nyamilepedia has learned.
The United States last week sanctioned First Vice President Taban Deng Gai for human rights abuses which includes the killing of two prominent government critics.
The US state department said Taban has also been involved in divisive acts against the country’s opposition which has prolonged the conflict.
Speaking to Nyamilepedia this afternoon, a government source in Juba said US secretary of state Michael Pompeo wrote to his South Sudanese counterpart Awut Deng asking her to convey to President Kiir that government officials on US sanction list should be removed from the government.
“The US foreign minister – who is referred to as secretary of state otherwise – Michael Pompeo has wrote to the minister of foreign affairs asking President Salva Kiir to remove all those included in the sanction list,” the government official who requested not to be named said.
They said First Vice President Taban Deng is not an acceptation for this if the government was to be committed to the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
