November 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United States has recalled its South Sudan ambassador in shift to its policy towards the world’s youngest nation after a failure by the parties to the revitalized peace agreement to form a unity government on November 12th.

“The Department of State has called back U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Thomas Hushek for consultations related to the recent failure of parties to form the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity by the extended deadline of November 12,” the US state department said in a statement on Monday.

“While in Washington, Ambassador Hushek will meet with senior U.S. government officials as part of the re-evaluation of the U.S. relationship with the Government of South Sudan given the latest developments,” the statement added.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny agreed during a meeting in Uganda early this month to extend the pre-transitional period for three months after a consensus that the pre-transitional tasks viable for a unity government formation were not in place.

President Kiir had threatened to form the unity government without his main peace partners such as Machar. For his part, Machar said he will not be a part to the government Kiir would have formed on November 12th because all the outstanding issues were to be in place.

The US had threatened that it will not recognize any government without Machar calling on President Kiir to disburse all the amount it pledged to pay in May to the National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC) for peace implementation.

Following the extension of the pre-transitional period for 100 days (or three months and 10 days), the US expressed its anger on the South Sudan government saying the South Sudan rivals should have formed the government as planned.

“The United States stands with the people of South Sudan in their pursuit of peace and will work in partnership with the region to support efforts to achieve peace and a successful political transition in South Sudan,” the statement further said.
