February 9th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A United States lawmaker has urged President Salva Kiir to release prominent civil rights activist, Peter Biar Ajak from detention.
Ajak, a youth leader and a Harvard graduate, was arrested on July 28th at Juba International Airport while travelling to the Northern Bahr Al-Ghazal state capital Aweil for a Red Army function.
He has since remained under the detention of the National Security without being taken to court.
Speaking at the US House of Representatives, Madeleine Dean, a Democratic US lawmaker, called on President Kiir to release Ajak and other detainees currently being held in different government prisons across the country.
”I call on President Kiir to release Peter and all political prisoners in South Sudan,” Dean who said she taught Ajak at La Salle University said.
South Sudan government and opposition groups signed a peace deal in September 2018. The deal provides for the release of all political detainees and prisoners of war.
Only few detainees have been released by the government in contrary.
