March 29, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — The United States government has announced a $8 million aid package to Sudan and South Sudan to fight the novel coronavirus.
The aid to South Sudan is a part of global health emergency aid by the American government to help countries to fight the pandemic which has infected hundreds of thousands of people and killed many.
“In addition to health assistance, humanitarian funding is being provided for South Sudan ($8 million), and Sudan ($8 million),” the US State Department said in a statement issued on Friday.
“This assistance will primarily provide health-related support and supplies to bolster water and sanitation activities,” the statement added.
South Sudan is one of the few countries around the world with no confirmed cases of the virus which began from the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year.
A number of suspected cases in the country’s capital Juba and some states have tested negative for the novel coronavirus also known as COVID-19.
South Sudan’s neighbors, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia, have all confirmed cases of the virus.
Sudan, as of Friday, had 5 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus also known as COVID-19. Around 80 people at being tested for suspicion of having the virus in Khartoum according to health minister Akram al-Tom.
