July 9th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The government of the United States of America on Tuesday congratulated South Sudan, world’s youngest nation, as its turn eight, since gaining independence from Sudan.
In July 2011, South Sudan gained its independence from the neighboring Sudan following an overwhelming vote for secession in January that year in a referendum provided for in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed by the SPLM rebel and government.
The United States is one of the countries that helped South Sudan achieve the 2011 independence. In a statement on Tuesday, US ambassador to Juba, Thomas Hushek congratulate South Sudan on its 8th independence anniversary.
“On behalf of the U.S. Embassy I extend our best wishes for the people of South Sudan on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of independence,” Hushek said.
The US diplomat commended and acknowledged the steps taken by South Sudan’s leaders saying these are some of the milestones that will help the people of South Sudan achieve their much-needed aspirations.
“Developments in South Sudan over the past year have been remarkable-the signing of a peace agreement and efforts to maintain the ceasefire, but these are only the first step towards the much bigger aspirations of the South Sudanese people and the much bigger hopes we, as South Sudan’s friends, have for the country,” he said
