November 20th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United States of America has called on South Sudan parties to the revitalized peace agreement and to hold on to the permanent ceasefire.

South Sudan government and opposition groups signed a revitalized peace agreement in September last year to end the country’s six-year-old civil war.

The parties were required by the agreement to form a Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) in May but because pre-transitional tasks needed in place before the government formation weren’t in place.

The parties extended during a meeting in Addis Ababa during the first days of May and set a November 12th deadline which ended up with a new extension last week.

President Kiir and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny met in Entebbe last week and decided to postpone the formation of the revitalized unity government for February next year,

Speaking to SSBC following a meeting with President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Tuesday, US ambassador to South Sudan Thomas Hushek said the parties should hold on to ceasefire agreement and expedite the ongoing peace process.

United States of America want all the parties to hold on to ceasefire agreement and implement the peace deal,” Hushek said.

Ambassador Hushek made the statement after his meeting with President Salva Kiir at the State House on Tuesday.

Hushek added that the Trump administration wants to see the Parties signatories to the Peace agreement to develop a working habit of future unity Government.

For her part, South Sudan’s minister of foreign affairs Awut Deng who attended the meeting said the US envoy discussed with Kiir how to expedite the peace process and the implementation of the outstanding issues before the end of the pre-transitional period in February 2020.
