Feb 23, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador Kelly Craft, welcomes the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity and calls on South Sudanese leaders to translate hope into a better future for the people of South Sudan.
“I welcome the decision by the government and opposition parties to form a new, transitional unity government.” Ambassador Kelly Craft said.
“The real work—the hardest work—begins now, and I urge President Salva Kiir, Dr. Riek Machar, and all of South Sudan’s leaders to show the courage and fortitude needed at this moment to translate hope into a better future for South Sudan.” Ambassador Craft emphasized.
Ambassador Craft believes that what the South Sudan leaders have shown was just but the first step in a series of critical steps that must be taken to bring dignity and peace to the world’s youngest nation.
“South Sudan is a nation longing for peace, stability and a brighter future for its people.” Ambassador Craft said.
“This is the first in a series of critical steps that must be taken to bring dignity and peace to the people of South Sudan.” She continued.
 Ambassador Craft pledged that she is prepared to assists the South Sudanese leaders if they continue to work towards peace, security and prosperity.
“I am personally prepared to assist in these efforts, as is the government of the United States. Peace, security, and prosperity are within grasp, and now is the moment to reach.” Ambassador Craft concludes.
Ambassador Craft’s statement reiterates what her predecessors have repeatedly said in their series of statements for the past seven years as the United States continues to play a role of a “midwife” from a distance.
In Juba, the South Sudanese leaders are challenging the US and her partners to release funding for the implementation of the peace agreement but little has been delivered so far.
While Kiir and Machar have made an attempt to reach the dateline this past weekend, the two leaders reached another deadlock on who should appoint which ministerial portfolio.
The revitalized peace agreement was signed on September 12, 2018 and the transitional period should last for 3 years, however, the parties are yet to implement critical requirements that were expected to be completed within the first six months – leaving doubts on whether or not the parties will implement what remains within the remaining time frame.
