September 15th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has condemned today’s attack by SPLA troops against its peacekeepers in Yei town saying the army lacks central command.

During the early hours of Saturday, government troops attacked UN base in Yei before attacking a convoy belonging to the world body later.

In a statement issued by the UN mission this afternoon, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the head of UNMISS, David Shearer, condemned the attack saying it justify the lack of central command in the SPLA.

“This situation is evidence of a lack of command and control of armed forces which has resulted in unruly elements who continue to commit human rights abuses in the area. It is beholden on the Government to bring their forces under control,” Shearer said.

The UN boas in the country said stressed that fight should stop following the signing of the agreement by all parties to the South Sudan conflict.

“The signing of the revitalized peace agreement by all parties to the conflict three days ago heralded a time of optimism for the future. It is disheartening that, despite the new agreement, fighting is continuing in the Central Equatorian region,” he said.

He said for peace to return,  all warring parties must disengage their forces to rebel fighting.

“All forces must disengage as required by the peace agreement and end the violence. The parties must also work together to build trust between themselves and with the people of South Sudan who are suffering immensely from the ongoing conflict,” he said.
