February 4th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A group of an unknown gunmen have opened fire against civilians near Yei town, government officials and several residents have said.

According to Zechariah Duku, Yei River state information minister, the incident which he said was carried out by rebels of National Salvation Front (NAS) led by Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka, occurred on Thursday few kilometers east-west of Yei town.

He said others are still being treated for serious injuries at a local hospital in Yei town. He urged the South Sudan government in Juba as well as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)  to help in defeating NAS which he said is threatening the life of civilians in the state.

“The government of Yei River state call upon the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGONU), the IGAD, CTSAMM and the AU to assist in ending the activities of National Salvation Front (NAS) in Yei River state,” Zechariah told the VOA’s South Sudan in focus on Friday.

For his part, NAS spokesman, Samuel Suba Manase denied that his group is responsible for killing civilians accusing instead the government of Yei River state of caring out the killings.
