Unity State Deputy Governor condemns barbaric killing of civilians in Leer County

Unity State, South Sudan

April 11, 2022 — The Deputy Governor of Unity State, Hon. Tor Tungwar Kueiguong,  has condemned offensives that razed Machar’s hometown to ashes between Friday and Saturday, April 8th and 9th, 2022.

Hon. Tungwar, who doubles as the Chairperson of the SPLM (IO) party in Unity State, condemned the barbaric attacks against civil population in Leer County under commands of the commissioners of Mayiandit and Koch counties, which according to the deputy governor, have been ongoing since 14th of February to date.

In his remark, which was extended to Nyamilepedia, the deputy governor calls on the presidency to pay attention to the situation in Leer county and Unity State as a whole.

“.. The SPLM /SPLA (IO) in Unity State would like to take this opportunity to inform the Presidency of the Republic of South Sudan, all mechanisms and peace guarantors on a series of violations and the ongoing suffering inflicted on the civil populations in Southern Unity by the Commissioners of Koch and Mayiandit Counties since the 14th of February 2022 up to date “, Unity State Deputy Governor Tor said in a statement obtained by Nyamilepedia.

Tungwar said the civilians in those localities have not been enjoying peace dividends of peace all along since the above mentioned date.

According to the deputy governor, the two commissioners of Koch and Mayiandit, who are carrying out these attacks are currently assembled in one area called Rubkuay with intentions to carry out more offensives on the remnants of Leer county that are already displaced to the swamps.

” As of now, the two commissioners are in Rubkuay of Mayiandit County for the purpose of their joint operation against the civil population of Leer County, and as result the civilians are being killed and their properties are being looted.”  Tungwar stressed, adding that the entire villages of Leer County are displaced to swamp areas.

Tungwar said the two commissioners, who are accused of conducting these atrocities, are expected to work in accordance with the R-ARCSS like the other five (5) commissioners in the state, unfortunately they are not.

“.. However, it is important to note that the two commissioners are part and parcel of the seven (7) County Commissioners of the Revitalized Government of the Unity State. In this situation they are expected to be working in lines with the Revitalized Peace Agreement and the spirits of the Revitalized Government of Unity State “, Tungwar elaborated with concerns.

“.. On behalf of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) in Unity State, we condemn the activities of the two commissioners in the strongest term possible “, he said.

Tungwar reaffirmed the commitment of the SPLM /SPLA (IO) to peace and calls on Presidency and peace guarantors to intervene into the crisis and allow the urgent humanitarian assistance to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
