March 12th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United States’ Trump Administration wants the government of South Sudan government to use its own money in the implementation of the peace agreement rather than spending it on war and corruption.

The United States acting ambassador to the United Nations, Jonathan Cohen, said during remarks at a consultation meeting for the UN Security Council over the possible renewal of the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan that South Sudan should instead use its money on peace implementation.

“One fundamental, yet powerful, step the government should take is to use its own resources to support peace, rather than war and corruption,” Cohen said.

“The government should make use of its increased oil revenues in a transparent manner to support the agreement’s implementation and provide services to South Sudan’s people, many of whom are on the brink of famine yet again,” he added.

He further said the problems with the implementation of the agreement is not only the issue of money pointing to the role the government and other signatories could take to fully implement the agreement.

“But commitment to the agreement is not solely a matter of money. There are clear and immediate steps that the government and opposition parties can take to underscore their commitment to the South Sudanese people and the Agreement,” he stressed

For his part, South Sudan to the United Nations, Akuei Bona Malwal, said “Since the signing of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, the overall situation in South Sudan in terms of security, peace, and economic has improved noticeably,” he said
