October 22nd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Human Rights Division in South Sudan said on Sunday that it is concerned over the fate of abducted children by armed groups including the country’s military in South Sudan.
The United Nations this week accused South Sudan opposition groups of abducting over 900 people including children in the country’s Western Equatoria region saying minors were also used and forced to be raped by the groups.
Speaking during a press conference in Geneva on Sunday, the Chairperson of the United Nations Human Rights Division in South Sudan Eugene Nindorena said he is concerned about what is taking place against the abducted children especially the young girls whom he said are forced to have sex with the armed personnel.
The Chairperson of the Human Rights Division of the United Nations Mission in South Sudam, Eugene Nindorera, is deeply concerned about the alleged abductions and forcibly recruitment of children into armed forces.
“I think the more important concern is about what has happened to the young girls. Girls were sometimes only 12 years old and they were chosen as wives for the military. They had to parade in front of them and then they could really choose whoever they wanted. And, they used them, and they were, of course, doing the rape and also sexual slavery,” he said.
The UN report released this week has identified three commanders allied to South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, the SPLM-IO rebel movement, led by the country’s former First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar as responsible for ordering their forces to commit human rights abuses against civilians.
The report further stated that the alleged violations of human rights may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The report also accused South Sudan’s army the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) of committing serious violations, including unlawful killings and destruction of civilian properties particularly around Nagero in Central Equatoria region in May.
