January 18th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Kingdom (UK) vowed on Thursday that it will continue supporting the ongoing peace process in the world’s youngest nation,  South Sudan.

President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader Dr.  Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon in September last year signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement to end the ongoing civil war.

The Troika to which the UK is a member said they will not support the agreement because the transitional government stipulated for in the agreement will also be led by the same “morally corrupt” leaders of the SPLM.

In an exclusive interview with the Miraya FM on Thursday, British Ambassador to South Sudan Alison Blackburne said her country will continue to support the agreement seriously.

“UK will continue to be fully engaged and really support Peace in South Sudan which is what the people of this country really need and deserve,” she told the Miraya breakfast show.

Blackburne further said her government is looking for real signs and commitment by the parties in the implementation process before it commits further funding to the peace process adding that although there has been improvement in the security situation in some areas,  the international community remains concerned about pockets of violence in the Equatoria region pointing to the most recent fighting in Yei river state.

She further reminded the parties to the agreement of their responsibility to cease hostilities and to ensure progress in other areas of the peace agreement.
