UNHCR welcomes South Sudan to the 1951 Convention

October 2nd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) –  The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee has today welcomed the Republic of South Sudan to the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol.

South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly on Friday, officially ratified the instrument accession in the capital Juba and then submitted the document to the President for its final  declaration.

According to the United Nations Convention’s 1951 Convention on Refugees and its 1967 protocol, the World’s youngest nation that descended into civil war in 2013  has now officially joined 142rd State parties to the Convention

In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia today, the Director of the UN Refugee Agency’s Regional Bureau for Africa, Valentin Tapsoba described the signing of the Universal  Declaration of human rights a milestone as it demonstrates the country’s commitment to protecting refugees that are being displaced from its neighbouring countries.

“This is a milestone for the world’s youngest nation as South Sudan commits to assuming more responsibility to protect refugees and asylum-seekers in the country,” said Tapsoba.

South Sudan is also one of the State parties that have signed the 1969 Organisation of African Union Convention on Refugees, but the youngest nation has not ratified yet, the Convention

South Sudan hosts thousands of resemble refugees, a report released last month, by the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees showed that, the influx of Sudanese Refugees into South Sudan has reached 300,000 people.

The Convention that went  into force on 22 April  1954 upholds the right of a person  to seek asylum from another country irrespective of their race, gender, political affiliation, and other discriminations.
