Oct 11, 2018(Nyamilepedia) — The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the UN mission in Abyei, also known as, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and urged South Sudan and Sudan to agree on border demarcations.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the UN Security Council ordered South Sudan and Sudan to make an arrangement, agree on a time frame and determine 10 entry points for free movement.

The Security Council extended the mandate of the World Peacekeeping mission until April, next year.

The resolution instructed disputing parties to immediately withdraw their troops from Safe Demilitarized Border Zone and allow unhindered passage for humanitarian operations in the area.

The Abyei region, is one of the disputed areas, claim by the two countries.

The United Nations peacekeeping forces  were deployed in the Abyei disputed region  in 2011 following clashes between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the Sudan Army Forces (SAF).

In 2013 unilateral Abyei referendums were held by certain tribes who wanted  to decide their future; however, both Sudan and South Sudan failed to recognize the results citing irregularities.

Early this year, delegates from the Dinka Ngok and Misseriya ethnic groups signed a memorandum of understanding in an effort to stop hostilities among themselves.
