The United Nations has defended the decision to erect the sign as necessary for security and at the request of those seeking help
October 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has said the need for protection of civilians in South Sudan will remain until a stable government is formed.
David Shearer, the head of the UN mission and the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General (SRSG), said around 200,000 people are still seeking protection in UN PoCs across the country.
Shearer said a total figure – according to the latest update from UNMISS – include 115,960 in Bentiu, 32,608 in Malakal, 29,745 in Juba UN House, 1,935 in Bor, and 14,706 in the area adjacent to UNMISS in Wau.
“It is a complex issue. These sites were set up as a last resort to physically protect people in immediate fear for their lives,” he said while speaking to reporters in Juba last week. “Many left of their own accord while others have asked for assistance from humanitarian agencies and UNMISS.”
The senior UN official further urged the government in Juba to create the conditions needed for displaced families to return safely and live with dignity.
“In particular, the government needs to do more to find land for people who want to leave PoC sites,” Shearer said.
“But we should remember that, if there is durable peace with a transitional government established, the need for PoC sites will no longer exist,” said Shearer.
