June 5th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan said on Monday in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia that a convoy belonging to its Peacekeepers in South Sudan’s Leer, a town in southern Unity, were attacked at Rubkuai when their convoy stopped in the village to briefly interact with a civilian.

The UNMISS said the attack took place approximately 20 kilometers north of Leer town where the peacekeeping mission have been based since its deployment in the southern Unity few years ago.

“UNMISS strongly condemns this attack against its personnel and calls on all parties to respect the freedom of movement of UN personnel carrying out their mandate, and to cooperate with peacekeepers as they work to protect civilians; monitor human rights; create conducive environment for delivery of humanitarian aid, and support efforts to restore peace,” the UNMISS said in the statement.

The statement added that the world body’s mission in the young African country continues to engage with local authorities and urge the warring parties to cease fighting and recommit to the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) signed in December 2017 between the South Sudan government and a number of armed groups including the SPLM-IO under the leadership of the country’s former first vice president Riek Machar.

“The Mission continues to engage with local authorities and to urge the warring parties to stop fighting and adhere to the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement signed by all parties just five months ago,” the statement said.

However, the statement did not identify the perpetrators but Rubkuai is controlled by forces loyal to the South Sudanese government.
