April 23 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — The Unite Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has deployed troops to Unity State’s Abiemnom county to prevent killings in the area.
This comes after an attack by unidentified gunmen killed around five people leaving others, including three women and two children, wounded.
The Abiemnom attack comes after a similar attack in Mayom county early this week by unidentified gunmen believed to have come from Warrap state.
In the attack, around three people were killed by the attackers were later on defeated and a number of cattle was rescued, according to eye witnesses.
Bul Intellectuals’ Forum (BIF) then issued a statement to condemn that “cowardly” attack which they said jeopardizes the peaceful co-existence between the neighbors.
The statement urged governments from Unity and Warrab states to address the longtime border cattle raiding which has killed hundreds of people throughout the years.
“The Bul Intellectuals Forum condemns in the strongest term possible the recent cattle raiding incident in Bieh Payam of Mayom County, Unity State by raiders from the neighboring Warrap State on 21st April 2020,” the statement partly reads.
“We call on both State governments and local authorities to bring culprits to book and resuscitate previous efforts of cross-border dialogues to promote peaceful coexistence between communities along the borders of the sisterly states.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families of Bul Community at home and abroad. As intellectuals, we are concerned by the recurring cattle rustling incidents and insecurity that have been prevailing in the area for the last three years.
“In conclusion, we urge the Presidency to speed up the formation of State and local governments to help address this sporadic skirmishes and hold perpetrators to account.”
