September 16th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday in a report to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that the National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirilo is no longer a threat to the peace process in South Sudan.
Guterres who was reading the report to the UNSC said the holdout opposition group was displaced following a fight with SPLM-IO in its stronghold in Lobonok County in July where it had access to resources such as gold.
“Fighting in Payai, outside Lobonok, at the end of July resulted in NAS ceding control of a gold-mining area to SPLA-IO forces,” Guterres said.
Guterres who blamed the NAS for being behind insecurity and high levels of violent crimes said the group’s activities have been only limited to cross-border movements between South Sudan, Uganda, DR Congo among other places.
“In Eastern Equatoria, NAS activity has been limited to cross-border areas around greater Magwi, where ethnic alliances provide a small area of allegiance,” Guterres said.
