Juba, South Sudan,
July 26, 2021 – The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has welcomed the release of a Journalist working for the state-affiliated South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Saturday.
Journalist Alfred Angasi Domanic was arrested by the National Security Service for allegedly refusing to read a news piece that contained the presidential decree of Salva Kiir.Â
In a statement extended to Nyamilepedia, UJOSS President Oyet Patrick Charles welcomes the release of Domanic and thanked all parties for responding to their calls and facilitating the release of the scribe.
“UJOSS welcomes the setting free of Alfred Angasi Domanic and thanks all parties involved for listening to our plea and taking the necessary action”, UJOSS says.
Charles says his administration will work in collaboration with stakeholders, National Security, and the South Sudan Media Authority to ensure a safe environment for journalists.
” UJOSS will continue to work with stakeholders including the National Security Service and South Sudan Media Authority to ensure a good environment for all journalists to foster a mutual understanding for the development of South Sudan”, he said in a statement.
The media environment in South Sudan remained risky for the journalism profession. Reporters Without Borders ranked South Sudan among the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists in its World Press Freedom Index reports of 2020 and 2021.Â
