Uhuru, Raila Receive Building Bridges Initiative report

Oct 21, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report was today handed to President Uhuru Kenyatta and the former prime minister, who is also his handshake partner Raila Odinga, but Kenyans will have to wait until Monday for the formal launch.

The handshake duo received the report at the Kisii Kisii State Lodge today October 21, 2020.

“Today is the day we have been waiting for. We now have a report that people can discuss. The document is not for President Uhuru Kenyatta and myself but this generation and beyond. Let the informed conversation begin now. I’m certain we will arrive at a consensus.” Raila Odinga states.

The deputy president, who has vowed to oppose the report, was not present in the occasion.

President Kenyatta said that the report is holistic and will help address constitutional and non-constitutional issues ailing the country since independence. 

He said that the document belongs to all Kenyans taking the opportunity to urge Kenyans to read and understand it when it is unveiled at the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi on Monday.

“This document does not belong, first and foremost, to me and Raila (Odinga). It belongs to you,” President Kenyatta said.

“This document is not about this individual presidency and that individual premiership. What we are looking for is a document for prosperity,” Kenyatta said.

Former prime minister said that the BBI report is a product of handshake whle dismissing Deputy president Ruto claim that BBI was crafted to propel the Opposition chief to the presidency while creating Kenyatta’s a plum Prime Minister’s post when he retires.

“The BBI report recommendations are not cast in stone. They are for you to engage,” Odinga said.

“This is the day that many people have been waiting for. We now have a report that people can talk about it,” he added.

BBI report recommendations

The report recommends for constitutional amendments that create the positions of Prime Minister, his two deputies and the Leader of the Official Opposition in order to deal to deal with the predictable post-election instability.

According to the report, the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, the Attorney-General and the Leader of the Official Opposition-being the person who was the runner-up in the Presidential election, be part of affairs of Parliament.

The prime minster shall be nominated by the president within seven days after swearing in and then handed over to parliament for consideration.

Within seven days of the Speaker receiving a nomination from the President, the Speaker shall call a vote in the National Assembly to confirm the appointment of the person proposed by the President.
