Ugandan troops fighting alongside government forces in South Sudan – reports

February 24TH 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Troops belonging to the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) are fighting in South Sudan’s Yei River state alongside South Sudan army which is fighting holdout opposition troops led by Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka, several sources told the Nyamilepedia on Saturday.

One source in Yei town said over the weekend that Ugandan troops are in the front lines fighting beside the South Sudan army against the National Salvation Front (NAS).

“We have been told that the UPDF are here in Yei fighting against NAS on the side of the government. They have been here since December but they are not inside the Yei town, they are in combat zones,” one source told the Nyamilepedia from Yei on the condition of anonymity.

Another source told the Nyamilepedia that the foreign troops entered South Sudan on the pretext of escorting road engineers constructing the Yei-Kaya Road but remained after the construction was finished.

“Some of them came in to protect the engineers who came to renovate the Yei-Kaya road. But to our surprise, they have chosen to remain after the job was finished and are now fighting for the government of South Sudan,” the source said.

“I think the government knows why they were allowed to enter the country. Protecting Ugandan engineers is not enough for the UPDF to justify its presence in our territory because our government can do it as well,” the source added.
