September 25th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Ugandan speaker of parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has urged the Government of South Sudan to safeguard Ugandan business community that are operating in the country.
In a brief statement, Ms Kadaga said Ugandan traders that are seeking business opportunities in Africa’s youngest nation have been subjected to harassment and sometimes threatened with eviction by the South Sudanese law enforcement agents in the country.
“During a meeting with Uganda traders in Juba, I was informed they required extra protection because they are being threatened with eviction by the locals yet they have invested a lot in country,” she said in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia.
Trade between Uganda and its neighbouring South Sudan is flourishing well despite harassment Ugandan traders said they faces especially bus drivers.
The ongoing civil war in the country has led to years of violent conflict between South Sudan’s warring parties, hindering business activities from being carried out by foreign traders.
Following the secession of South Sudan from the North in 2011, and before the civil war broke out, the country had witnessed an influx of business people and commercial banks from neighbouring countries and came to Juba, seeking to establish successful businesses.
