Oct 30, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — Uganda police has announced that it will close some major roads in Kampala ahead of the presidential candidate nominations.
The National Electoral Commission is set to conduct the Presidential Nominations on November 2 and 3, 2020 at Cricket Grounds Kyambogo.
According to a statement shared by Norman Musinga, the Kampala Metropolitan traffic police commander, the residents of Kyambogo and Kireka will not be allowed to leave their homes during the daytime.
“No person will be allowed to loiter in the vicinity of nomination venue except candidates and their entourage of not more than 10 people.” Musinga announced.
Mr. Musinga added that some motorist will be diverted to use other roads within the city.
“Motorists will be diverted at Spear Motors (IOV), Banda trading centre, Kireka trading centre, Kigobe road at National Council of Higher Education and Jokas hotel,” Musinga said.
“Other motorists heading to Jinja from Kampala can also access through;
Old Port bell Road, Spring Road via Kireka Road to Kinawataka and join Kampala – Jinja Highway at Bweyogerere Trading Centre New Port bell Road, Ismail Road or Via Kireka Road to Kinawataka Road and join Kamapala and New Port bell Road Nakawa, Chwa II Road, Kinawataka, Jokas Hotel and join Kampala – Jinja Highway at Bweyogerere Trading Centre,” he said in a statement.
He went on to say that the Kyambogo cricket ground will only be accessible to presidential aspirants, their recommended number of people accredited by Electoral Commission and Electoral Commission officials.
“The accredited VIPs will access the Nomination Centre through Kyambogo Road, Kyambogo University Western gate and park as will be directed by Traffic Police,” he said.
“No procession along the road will be allowed before, during and after nominations. Presidential Aspirants will park at the parking adjacent to the Nomination Centre,” said Musinga.
“Motorists accompanying the presidential Aspirants will park adjacent to Western gate as will be guided by Traffic Police.
Parking along the road is prohibited, motor vehicles found abandoned by the road side will be towed to the nearest Police Stations at the owners cost and inconvenience,” reads the plan in part.
There are 22 candidates that have so far submitted signatures, six of which are sponsored by political parties while Eighteen of the candidates are Independents.
