U.S Embassy in Juba calls for immediate release of V.O.A detained freelance reporter.

Juba, South Sudan

August 14, 2022 — United States of America’s Embassy to the Republic of South Sudan demands an immediate release of the V.O.A journalist, Diing Magot, who was arrested last Sunday.

Diing, a freelance reporter was arrested on Sunday last week while covering a peaceful demonstration by the citizens protesting the skyrocketing of price commodities in the market.

In a statement obtained by Nyamilepdia, the U.S Embassy in Juba urges the authorities in the country to free the journalist.

“.. We call on authorities to immediately release detained journalist Diing Magot, a freelance reporter for the Voice of America”,the U.S Embassy reads.

” She has been detained since August 7 following her coverage of a peaceful protest in Juba”, the statement added.

U.S. Embassy say they calls on South Sudan authorities to respect the rights to peaceful assembly.

“..We call on authorities to respect the right to peacefully assemble. We call on authorities to permit journalists to do their jobs, without interference or harm”,the statement further inserted.

According to U.S Embassy, the right of journalists to seek information and share their findings with citizens is an integral part of a strong and transparent democratic society.
