Eastern Equatoria, South Sudan
May 10, 2022 — At least two brothers have been reportedly killed in Lafon County of South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State over a land dispute on Tuesday.
Authorities in the area said Anyanya Okeruk, 33, and Opiyo Okeruk, 35, were shot dead by a neighbour in Ohutok Village.
In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, Ohure Peter, a youth leader in Lafon, says that the two fell out with their neighbour over a piece of a farming land before it turned into violence.
The prime suspect, who was identified as Mr Orija, then picked a gun and shot at the two young men, killing them on spot.
“The issue happened in the garden where they fought and started shooting each other and Oriaja Killed the two sons,” Peter explained in a statement obtained by Nyamilepedia.
The County Executive Director Martin Ojok, confirmed the incident and called upon the state government to address the issue.
Ojok stated that the perpetrator is still at large.
“The person who shot the two brothers is not arrested, there are no forces for the chiefs to arrest the person who holding a gun,” he said.
“This needs government forces because when all the forces were taken away from here, people are now staying like there is no government, we need more police forces,” Ojok added.
However, the local official called for calm among the communities in the area as authorities look into the matter
