August 23rd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – A senior South Sudan military commander was killed on Wednesday during fierce battle with rebel forces outside Bentiu town on Wednesday with the rebel accusing the government of breaching the permanent ceasefire agreement signed in late June this year.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Brig. Gen. William Gatjiath Deng, the SPLA-IO spokesman said they killed the Brig. Gen. Benjamin Goa Gatkuoth who he said commanded government troops to attack the rebel forces.
“Yesterday evening at around 10:00PM, a Militia Commander Brig General Benjamin Goa Gatkuoth took the raid at night, as the war was intensifying, the bravest forces of the SPLA (IO) under command of Cdr Brig General Abraham Pen Kueth and Brig General Malek Wictuor managed to repulses and pursued the attackers and killed Brig General Benjamin Goa Gatkuoth in hot action a long with the other Nine (9) militia soldiers,” Gatjiath said.
He said the SPLA-IO forces were able to control the area despite government attack which took place at night.
“Moreover, Kuergeng military barrack has been controlled by the freedom fighters yesterday, even now this was after the government’s militias were scattered in the area,” he said.
The statement further said “The leadership of the SPLA (IO) would like to inform the international community, region and the people of South Sudan in particular that, the peace that has already signed, has become delicate and fragile due to the ill intention from Juba.”
